The Project

Aside from intent to give exposure to the participants’ aesthetic abilities, this interactive exhibit intends to explore the meaning-making process, and discrepancies between messages received by viewers contrasted against the message intended by the photographer, as well as the interplay between the meaning connoted or suggested (suggested or inferred meaning) and denotation (literal meaning).

Taken by Michael Appleton | Kerbala, Iraq
What the photographer saw

Shiite Muslims exit the Al Hussein Shine as they gather in Kerbala, Iraq to commemorate the life and death of Al Hussein. Hussein, the grandson of the prophet Mohammed, is a symbol of the struggle against repression for the Shiites. This year marks the first time since Saddam Hussein took office that the Shiites Muslims of Iraq have come together for the event without the fear repression from the now fallen regime.
